The Philippines President's Aspiration to Out-Massacre Hitler
The Atlantic Wire (RSS) Fri, Sep 30 9:23 AM PDT
Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said Friday he aspired to accomplish in his country the level of mass murder Adolf Hitler achieved, saying, “Hitler massacred 3 million Jews. Now there’s 3 million, there’s 3 million drug addicts. There are. I’d be happy to slaughter them.” Hitler, in fact, killed 6 million Jews. That doesn’t make Duterte’s comments any less distressing, coming as they do after several controversial remarks since before he was elected president earlier this year. Duterte took office at the end of June, and he’s made his feelings about drug addicts well known. He ran on a campaign promise to wage war on crime and drugs, and in his first few months in office, more than 3,500 ...

Awesome Citizen-Scientist Video Shows Juno Probe's Arrival at Jupiter
SPACE.com 17 hours ago
NASA's Juno spacecraft trekked 1.7 billion miles (2.8 billion kilometers) to reach Jupiter, and a new video by a NASA fan documents the probe's precise approach into orbit around the gas giant. Juno arrived at Jupiter on July 4, 2016, after nearly five years of space travel. A belt of very intense radiation surrounds Jupiter and can quickly destroy spacecraft electronics, so Juno entered a very specific orbit around the planet to avoid the worst of the radiation. The new time-lapse video was created by citizen scientist Gerald Eichstädt, using a compilation of JunoCam images taken between July 5 and Aug. 27, 2016, according to a statement from NASA. The video documents Juno's slow and steady ...

Deadly house explosion in the Bronx
A battalion chief who had been considered a rising star in the New York Fire Department was killed Tuesday when a row house exploded as he was supervising an evacuation following the report of a gas leak. Authorities are looking into whether the building was used to grow marijuana.
Later Tuesday, investigators said they were questioning a person of interest but provided no details.
The two-story house and adjoining homes in the Bronx had already been emptied of occupants and fire personnel had been on the scene for an hour when the 7:30 a.m. blast jolted neighbors awake, tore off the building’s roof, and hurled pieces of wood and brick into the street.
Michael Fahy, a 17-year fire department veteran and father of three, was directing operations from the street when he was hit by falling debris, authorities said. (AP)

Houston police tweeted on Monday that the gunman is a lawyer, adding that they are working to determine "if issues at his firm led to the shooting."
Mayor Sylvester Turner reportedly told KTRK-TV that the shooter was a "disgruntled" attorney who was "either fired or had a bad relationship with his law firm," the Associated Press reports.
While police haven't identified the gunman, a bomb-squad robot examined a Porsche that, according to records, is licensed to a man named Nathan DeSai, according to the AP. The suspect randomly shot at drivers in the Houston neighborhood, the AP reports. Six people were shot and three suffered eye injuries from flying glass. Police said on Monday they believe the man acted alone and officials are investigating a motive.
